Francis Marion University’s Premier Pledge scholarship program is entering its fourth year of helping make a college education more accessible and affordable for South Carolina students.
Since its creation, the highly successful program has provided additional support and opportunities for first-generation college students and other students who face financial barriers to attending college. Premier Pledge reflects the university’s longstanding commitment to ensuring that a high-quality college education remains within reach for students and families across the state.
The Premier Pledge scholarship program is available to eligible admitted in-state students. Financial support provided through the program, combined with federal, state, and institutional assistance for which students qualify, will cover tuition costs during their freshman year.
The program also extends beyond financial assistance.

Eligible students also receive early admission and scholarship decisions, providing greater certainty as they make plans for college. Students also benefit from the university’s renowned peer mentoring program, which provides guidance, encouragement, and support as they make the transition to college from high school.
FMU Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. John Rowan said the program has been extraordinarily successful in creating opportunities for students who might otherwise view the cost of college as an obstacle.
“We are extremely proud of what Premier Pledge has accomplished over the past four years,” said Rowan. “This program opens doors that need to be opened for students across South Carolina, particularly those who face financial or other barriers to pursuing a college education. Premier Pledge does more than help students afford college. It surrounds them with the support they need to succeed once they arrive.”
For nearly sixty years, Francis Marion has remained committed to educating the men and women of South Carolina while addressing the financial challenges that can make earning a college degree difficult. Premier Pledge builds upon that commitment by combining affordability, early access, and student support in a comprehensive program designed to help students succeed.
At Francis Marion, the university’s priorities remain centered on what matters most: offering a quality curriculum, managing college expenses sensibly, and fostering meaningful engagement between students and a dedicated faculty. As a university with no institutional debt, FMU is equally committed to helping its students minimize theirs. The continued success of Premier Pledge is yet another example of that commitment and of the university’s ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities for South Carolina students.
