BRANCHVILLE - The Branchville Yellow Jackets defeated Green Sea-Floyds by a 3-0 score in the second round of South Carolina High School League Class A state playoffs on Monday, by set scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-16.
The win advances Branchville to play host to Lake View Wednesday at 6 p.m. in third-round play.
On Monday, Branchville was led by Abby Funchess with 10 kills and 23 assists, Lynasia Felder with 8 kills, Kelsey Kinard with 8 kills and 2 blocks, Ashley Wright with 5 kills and Madison Leggett with 9 aces, 16 receptions and 28 digs.
The Region 5-A champion Yellow Jackets carry a 20-10-2 record.
Claflin women finish
5th at SIAC cross
ALBANY, Ga. — The Claflin University women's cross country team finished 5th overall at the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 20. The 5k race was contested at Albany State University.
The fifth-place finish was one place higher than Claflin finished last season.
Senior Jamaica Miller finished 10th overall to earn All-Conference honors. Miller clocked a 21:15.6 time, en route to her 10th-place finish.
“The women’s team performed well,” Claflin head coach Lincoln London said. “Their performance brings excitement for the indoor and outdoor season.”
Faith McKie ran a time of 23:43.2 and Brandi Taylor came in with a time of 23:53.9 to round out the top three competitors for the Lady Panthers.
Deja Pegues (24:31.0), Brandi McGrady (25:35.8), Mykel Barno (30:03.2), and Ayannah Harrell (31:28.1) closed out the times for the Claflin competitors.

-- Diara Lewis scored had 10 kills with three service aces for 13 points in leading Claflin University to a 3-0 straight set win (25-13, 25-12, 25-14) over Fort Valley State University in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division volleyball match Monday at the Tullis Arena.
Claflin improved to 6-15 overall and 6-7 in the SIAC.
Fort Valley State fell to 3-14 on the season with a 2-11 record in the SIAC.
Also playing a significant role in the Lady Panthers' victory was Jhi Piper-Murles with 12 digs and Chania Rispress with 30 assists. Jala Roberts contributed nine kills for nine points, while Jamie Dobson added six kills with one block solo and one block assist for 7.5 points.
Alexcia Herring, Alycia Perez-Johnson and Lewis had three serve aces apiece.
The Lady Panthers racked up 38 kills to just 16 for Fort Valley State. Claflin also recorded 10 serves aces and 33 assists.
Fort Valley State led just once in the match, a 1-0 lead in the third set. In that set, Claflin quickly tied the contest at 1-1 followed by a 12-3 run. The run put the Lady Panthers ahead at 13-4.
Claflin outscored Fort Valley State 12-9 the rest of the set for a 25-13 win.
In sets one and two, Claflin led from start to finish.
In the opening set, Claflin scored three straight points and built on the lead with a 13-6 run to lead 16-6. The Lady Panthers posted 15 kills in the opening set. Fort Valley State pulled to within 18-10 by scoring four of the next six points, only to see the Lady Panthers end the set on a 7-3 run for a 25-13 win.
The second set started pretty much the same way as Claflin raced out to a commanding 14-1 advantage. The two teams played on even terms the remainder of the set, scoring 11 points each, as Claflin won 25-12.
Claflin will close out its home season Friday (Oct. 27th) against arch-rival and divisional foe Benedict College for Senior Night. The match starts at 6 p.m. at the Tullis Arena.
