sends 14 to state meet

NORTH CHARLESTON - The Class 2A state champion Bamberg-Ehrhardt wrestling team had all 14 wrestlers who competed in the Class 2A-1A Lower State Individual Championships on Saturday at North Charleston High School qualify for the individual state meet.

It marked the first time any Class 2A program has had all 14 lower state competitors qualify for the state meet. The Red Raiders had 8 wrestlers win Lower State Championships in their weight classifications.

All classifications will wrestle for individual state titles at the Anderson Civic Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24. 

On Saturday at lower state, B-E scored 291 points to top all Class 2A-1A teams, while Marion scored 139 points and North Charleston scored 125 points.

Winning lower state titles for the Red Raiders were: (106-pound class) Jackson Stembridge, (132-pound class) Tyqueze Stuckey, (138-pound class) Quentin Blake, (152-pound class) Amir Muhammed, (170-pound class) James Gainyard, (182-pound class) Kohl Gagum, (195-pound class) KeSean Brown, and (285-pound class) De'Juan Sease.

Finishing as lower state runners-up for the Red Raiders were:  (113-pound class) Colby Hiers, (145-pound class) Anthony Sanders, and (220-pound class) Caleb Bearden.

Red Raiders with third-place finishes at lower state were:  (120-pound class) Donovan Price, (126-pound class) Nyguen Glover and (160-pound class) Isaiah Washington.

Edisto has three

qualify for state

BLUFFTON - The Edisto Cougars wrestling team had 3 wrestlers qualify for the state individual meet with their finishes in the Class 3A Lower State Individual Championships on Saturday at May River High School.

As a team, Edisto finished 10th.

The qualifiers for the Cougars included: (120-pound class) Brandon Sanford, (170-pound class) Jonathan Collins, (285-pound class champion) Hikeem Elmore.

All classifications will wrestle for individual state titles at the Anderson Civic Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.

ST. MATTHEWS - The Saints fell at home by a basket on Saturday in the second round of SCHSL Class 2A Lower State playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets moved to 13-13 with the win and earned a game on Tuesday at region foe Carvers Bay. 

The Saints finished the season with a 21-5 record.

Zamuel Fredrick led Calhoun County with 12 points, while Eyen Zeigler added 10 points. After scoring just 9 points apiece in both the first and second quarters against Andrews, the Saints posted an 18-point third quarter and a 13-point fourth quarter.

Making just 11 of 22 free throws, Calhoun County struggled at the charity stripe in the contest.

QUINBY - The Bruins lost in the second round of SCHSL Class 4A Lower State playoffs on the road in Florence on Saturday, falling to the host Wilson Tigers.

Justin Hodges led O-W (20-5 final record) with 15 points, while Yohannes Utsey added 10 points.

The Bruins played well early and held an 18-14 lead after the first quarter.

But the Tigers pulled back to within one point, 27-26, at the half.

The Tigers outscored the Bruins 15-7 in the third and put themselves in a dominant position heading into the fourth.

Things only got worse for O-W, as senior guard Jordan Snell fouled out inside the opening 90 seconds of the fourth quarter. After that, Wilson team captain Jamonty Williams threw down a dunk, boosting the Tigers advantage to 10 points with five minutes left to play.

The Tigers (19-3) advanced, pushing their home record to 9-0 this season. Allen Williamson led Wilson with 20 points, while Alex Caldwell added 19 points.

COLUMBIA - The Indians saw their season come to an end in SCISA Class 3A State Tournament play on Saturday against Ben Lippen at Heathwood Hall.
