The Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bruins lost to the Chapin Eagles 31-12 Friday night in a Region 5-4A contest on Senior Night.

The Bruins (3-6 overall, 1-2 in region play) played hard, but they could not match up with the Eagles (6-3 overall, 3-1 in region play). Despite the loss, the Bruins' playoff hopes are still very high, and Bruins head football coach Tommy Brown knows what his team needs to do in order to make the playoffs.

“We just have to go win next week. Our backs are to the wall and we have to come out fighting,” Brown said.

“The effort was good tonight. We fought and had a chance, but we aren’t making plays when we need to.”

The first half of the game saw the Bruins' offense and defense struggle.

The defense struggled to keep the Eagles out of the end zone, giving up 24 points in the half.

The offense struggled for most of the half before Nicholas Lawson connected with Zach Felder in the end zone with 1:07 left in the half. The Eagles were able to add a field goal with two seconds left, giving them a 24-6 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Bruin defense pick up their play, and the offense struggle to finish drives with points.

The Bruin defense only gave up seven points in the entire second half. They were able to slow down the Eagles' running and passing game. The Eagles' lone score of the second half came at the 9:04 mark in the third quarter.

The offense was able to put together long drives before eventually having to punt the ball away. The Bruins were able to finish one of their drives with a touchdown, as Lawson found Zachery Felder for a 5-yard touchdown pass. That closed the gap, making the score 31-12. Lawson ended the game 20-36 for 200 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT.

Those were the only points of the second half for the Bruins. The Eagles' defense was able to keep them out of the end zone and secure the win for their team, 31-12.

The Bruins will travel next Friday to Hopkins to take on the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets. This is the Bruins' final region game of the season and will determine their seeding in the playoffs. Kickoff time is 7:30.
