ST. MATTHEWS - The Calhoun Academy volleyball team picked up a win in its first match of the season on Monday, taking a 3-2 home victory over Holly Hill Academy.

CA was led by Kaylee Kizer and Rebekah Haigler in serves, aces and digs. Blakely Kingsmore and Kizer led CA in blocks.

Year Two: Crosby, Bruins preparing for upcoming season

CA is 1-0, HHA is 0-1.

Clarendon Hall 0

ST. MATTHEWS - The Calhoun Academy Lady Cavs posted their second win in as many games to start the season, getting a 3-0 sweep of visiting Clarendon Hall School on Tuesday night.

CA won by scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17, and was led by Rebekah Haigler with 6 aces, 2 digs and 3 kills; Kaylee Kizer with 3 aces and a kill;  Reagan Kizer with 2 aces and a kill; and Margaret McLeod with a kill and a dig. 

CA is 2-0 and will play at Patrick Henry on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Dorchester Acad. 3,

Faith Christian 0

ST. GEORGE - The Dorchester Academy volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 home win against Faith Christian of Summerville on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders took wins of 25-11, 25-4 and 25-12.

Saylor Judy led the team with 13 aces and 10 assists, while Lauren Creel had 11 aces, 6 receptions and 3 digs, and Melayna Weathers added 4 kills and a block.

DA plays Thursday at home against Orangeburg Prep at 6 p.m.


Claflin volleyball picked 5th

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Claflin University volleyball team was predicted to finish sixth overall and fifth in the Southern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association preseason poll.

The predicted order of finish was announced by the conference office in conjunction with the Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

The Lady Panthers were picked to finish fifth in the Southern Division behind Fayetteville State University, the 2018 Southern Division runner-up; Shaw University, the 2018 CIAA Tournament champion; Winston-Salem State University, and Johnson C. Smith University.

Last season, the Lady Panthers finished with a 6-17 overall record and 6-12 conference record (2-10 in the Southern Division).

Claflin will open the 2019 season at home on Sept. 7 against Erskine College in a 2 p.m. contest in Tullis Arena.
