BLUFFTON – The Lake Marion Dixie Belles All-Stars went undefeated through the Belles Dixie Softball State Tournament at Oscar Frazier Park this week, posting a 5-0 record and winning the state title on Wednesday morning.
It was five days and five wins for the championship title, in tournament play that began on Saturday.
Lake Marion topped Georgetown, for the second time in the tournament, with a 16-7 score on Wednesday, advancing to the 2018 Dixie Softball World Series in Alexandria, Louisiana on July 27-Aug. 3.
With players representing Orangeburg Prep, Calhoun Academy, Branchville High and Colleton County High, the Lake Marion team came to Beaufort County focused on a title and a trip to the Dixie Softball World Series. Each game Lake Marion players wrote the hashtag #LM2LA on the inside of their forearms, reminding them throughout play what the goal of the week had to be at all times.
That focus led to 14 hits against Georgetown in the South Carolina state championship game.
Olivia Banks (Branchville) and Bailey Livingston (Orangeburg Prep) collected three hits apiece to pace Lake Marion. Rebekah Haigler (Calhoun Academy) and Laken Barnes (Calhoun Academy) each had two hits. Banks had a double and two RBI, while Haigler knocked in two runs and picked up the win pitching from the circle.
On Tuesday, Anslee McAlhany (Branchville) threw five innings of two-run softball, including five strikeouts, as Lake Marion eliminated Sumter County by a 12-2 score in five innings of play.
McAlhany also went 2-for-2 at plate to lead a 12-hit attack for Lake Marion. Livingston added two hits. Olivia Banks (Branchville HS) hit a three-run homer for her third home run of the tournament. Ryn Grubbs (Orangeburg Prep) added two RBI, as did Livingston.
