CARY, N.C. — Orangeburg's Marion Dantzler rebounded Saturday with a 3-under-par 69 in the second round of the PGA Champions Tour SAS Championship.
The third and final round of the event will take place today at Prestonwood Country Club.
Dantzler is tied for 32nd, along with 9 other golfers, including Rocco Mediate, Scott McCarron, Jeff Maggert and Bob Estes. Dantzler carded a 3 over par 74 on Friday and was tied for 57th after the first round in a group that included Tom Kite, Mark Calcavecchia and Mediate. After Saturday's round, he stands at 1 under par for the tournament.
Gene Sauers and Bernhard Langer are tied for the lead heading into Sunday's final round. Both recorded 5-under 67s on Saturday and stand at 15 under par. Tom Lehman is 3 strokes off the pace, after shooting a 67 on Friday and then posting a 70 on Saturday.
"Gene played great. Tom played really good earlier and then didn't finish quite as strong," Langer said. "There's a lot of good players out here, you've just got to keep the pedal down."
Dantzler finished first in Monday’s qualifier to earn a spot in the tournament.
The event is not the 55-year-old Dantzler’s first appearance on golf’s big stages.
He has played previously in the SAS Championship in 2014, and qualified for and competed in the U.S. Senior Open in 2015. The Champions Tour features top professional players age 50 and over.
