RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Claflin University volleyball team wrapped up the 2019 season on a winning note, defeating Saint Augustine’s University in straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-19) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Southern Division match on Friday.
Claflin finished the season at 7-17 overall including a 5-11 record against CIAA teams and 3-9 in the division. The road win also snapped a five-match losing streak for the Lady Panthers and gave Claflin the season sweep of Saint Augustine’s.
As for Saint Augustine’s, the Lady Falcons completed the season winless in all 17 matches with an 0-12 mark in the division.
For the match, the two teams were close in kills and digs. Claflin edged Saint Augustine’s 31-30 in kills, while the Lady Falcons nipped the Lady Panthers for digs at 55-54.
The Claflin offense produced five serves aces and 30 set assists.

Taylor Drayton and Makaylen Crosby led a balanced attack for the Lady Panthers with eight and seven kills respectively. Drayton, who ended the season with 191 kills, also added two blocks and seven digs in the match.
Other top performers for Claflin included Erin Preston with 26 assists along with 10 digs, while Trinity Fierce had a team-high in 14 digs, giving her 247 for the season.
Saint Augustine’s was led by Deandra Small with 11 kills and eight digs.
Claflin won a hard-fought first set 25-22 by scoring 11 of the last 19 points.
The Lady Panthers won the second set relatively easy at 25-13 before claiming the final set by six points for a 25-19 victory.
