The Claflin University women's volleyball team fell to Frostburg State University (3-1) and (3-2) to Paine College in a volleyball tri-match hosted by the Lady Panthers at Tullis Arena last Saturday (Sept. 21).

The losses dropped Claflin to 0-3 on the short season. The Lady Panthers will look to pick up its first win of the season this Tuesday (Sept. 24) when they host Benedict College in a 6:30 p.m. contest.

In the opening match of the tri-match, Claflin jumped out to a one set lead over Frostburg State, winning 25-21. The Bobcats won the next set 25-21 and easily won the third set, holding the Lady Panthers to just 15 points (25-15), to jump ahead 2-1 in the match.

Claflin stayed within striking distance in set four before falling in the set, 25-22, and the match 3-1.

Jala Roberts was the only player to record double-digit kills with 10. Roberts also had seven digs with one solo block and one block assist in the match. Sadaiya Edourd had a solid match finishing with nine kills, four service aces, two digs, two solo blocks and five block assists.

Léah Wellington put up 18 set assists with seven digs while Trinity Fierce finished the first match with 14 digs in the loss.

Claflin began its second match of the day very aggressive, jumping out to a two-set advantage over Paine. Over the course of the two sets, the Lady Panthers recorded 20 kills while holding Paine to just 15 kills combined.

After falling behind early in the third set (6-2), Claflin battled back to tie the game at 8-all and eventually taking a one-point lead at 16-15, appearing to have the set and match in hand but Paine would not stop fighting. The Lady Lions closed set three on a 9-5 run to take set three 25-20.

The teams went point-for-point throughout set four with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage. The Lady Panthers managed to fight off two set points late before dropping set four 26-24 allowing Paine to force a fifth and deciding set.

The final set belonged to the Lady Lions as they went up 6-2 and never looked back. Claflin did manage to string together a 4-1 run midway through the set but it wasn’t enough as Paine won the final set 15-8 and the match, 3-2.

Edouard, Roberts and Taylor Drayton all finished the match with double-digit kills. Edouard finished with 12 kills while Roberts and Drayton had 10 apiece. Edouard added one service ace, four digs, two solo blocks and two block assists to her stat line.

The Lady Panthers had three players to finish with double-digit digs led by Fierce with 20. Paris Heathman picked up 12 and Roberts had 10 in the match. Wellington added 23 set assists with seven digs in the loss.
