The Claflin University men’s and women’s basketball teams will entertain Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division double-header on Monday.
Action gets underway inside the Tullis Arena at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s contest followed by the men’s at approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the first game.
In the women’s game, Claflin will try to end a two-game losing streak and avenge a 79-43 defeat to Johnson C. Smith last month in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In that contest, the Lady Panthers hit a cold spell offensively in the second and third quarters, scoring just nine points in each period. The end result saw Johnson C. Smith lead 46-24 at halftime and 65-33 after the third quarter.
Claflin will be led by Ashley Fields at 15.9 points and 5.1 rebounds. Fields had 13 points in the loss to Johnson C. Smith, but is averaging 20.3 over the Lady Panthers' last three games. She racked up 22 points in Claflin's loss to Winston-Salem State University last time out.
Other players averaging in double figures for the Lady Panthers include Dashia Jackson at 12.4 points and Deja Jackson with 10.6 points.
The Lady Panthers are 12-12 overall, 8-8 in the CIAA.
Johnson C. Smith will enter the contest at 12-12 and 9-5 in the CIAA, following a 79-45 loss to Saint Augustine’s University last Saturday.
The Golden Bulls are led by Malia Rivers 9.0 points and Blaire Hewlett with 8.0 points.
In the men’s game, Claflin hopes to rebound from a disappointing 64-63 loss to Johnson C. Smith where Nenad Milenkovic scored the winning basket with 29 seconds left.
Since the road loss, the Panthers have reeled off three straight wins and hold a 10-12 overall record and 8-8 in the CIAA.
Claflin is led by three players in double-figures with Triston Thompson leading the way at 13.2 followed closely by Danny Brown at 13.1 points.
Austin Lawton rounds out double-digits, at 11.9 points.
As for Johnson C. Smith, the Golden Bulldogs suffered a 94-88 overtime loss to Fayetteville State their last time out.
Since the exciting win at home over Claflin, Johnson C. Smith is 2-2.
The Golden Bears are led by Roddic Ross with 17.4 points and Cayse Minor at 16.7 points.
The duo combined for over half of the Golden Bulls offensive production, 46 points, in the first meeting with Claflin. Minor scored 28 points and Ross added 18 points in the win.
After Monday’s game, the Panthers will travel to Morehouse College for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.
Both teams will be in action at home on next Monday, Feb. 18 for a CIAA double-header against Livingstone College. It will be Greek Night.
