Claflin softball sweeps
two from Bluefield State
MYRTLE BEACH – Claflin University pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and two hits as the Lady Panthers cruised past Bluefield State, 8-0 and 11-1, in a neutral site non-conference doubleheader at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
The win, the fifth straight for Claflin, pushed the Lady Panthers' overall record to 13-12. Bluefield State drops to 4-3 on the season.
Freshman pitcher Bre’Zhay Chambers picked up the 8-0 win in game one, going all six innings, allowing just two hits with 10 strikeouts, no walks and a hit-by-pitch against 20 batters faced.
Another freshman pitcher, Shaniya Thomas, was the winner in game two. She pitched 4 of the 5 innings, facing 18 batters while allowing just two walks, a hit-by-pitch and one run with eight strikeouts.
Senior Yamaya Rich pitched the final inning in game two, facing just three batters with one strikeout.
Claflin offense was equally as damaging, as they knocked out 22 hits, 12 in game one, and 10 in game two, including an in-the-park home run by senior LaKaylin Lee in game one. Lee finished the doubleheader, 2-for-5, with three runs scored.
Freshman Chaston Huntly was also solid for the Lady Panthers, finishing the doubleheader with three hits - including the game two winning hit, three runs and four RBI.
Hannah Fisher, who scored Bluefield State’s only run of the day, led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and advanced to second on a pass ball to put her in scoring position. Fisher’s run came off a throwing error by Thomas with two outs. Thomas struck out the final batter of the inning.
Claflin will remain on the road, traveling to Elizabeth City, N.C. Friday-Sunday, Mar. 15-17, to participate in the program's first-ever CIAA Roundup. The Lady Panthers will meet the six teams from the Northern Division of the conference over the three-day period.
Claflin baseball ranked
No. 4 in latest poll
The Claflin University baseball team is ranked No. 4 in the Black College Nines HBCU small schools poll announced Tuesday. The poll is separated into two divisions, large schools (NCAA Division I) and small schools (NCAA Division II, NAIA and Independent).
This is the first week for the poll which is announced every other Tuesday through May 21, 2019.
Claflin, which defeated The College of the Saint Rose on March 6, lost all three games last weekend to Florida Southern College, and is currently 12-7 this season.
The Panthers will return to action this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Mar. 16-17, against Tuskegee University in Montgomery, Ala. The teams will play a single game on Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday.
Missouri, Texas A&M win
in SEC Tournament play
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Missouri Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies won their opening-round games in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday inside Bridgestone Arena.
12th-ranked Missouri defeated 13th-ranked Georgia by a 71-61 score, and 11th-ranked Texas A&M defeated 14th-ranked Vanderbilt by a 69-52 score.
Thursday's second round play includes the following games: 12 p.m. Game 3: No. 9 seed Arkansas vs. No. 8 seed Florida SEC Network; Game 4: No. 12 seed Missouri vs. No. 5 seed Auburn SEC Network; 6 p.m. Game 5: No. 10 seed Alabama vs. No. 7 seed Ole Miss SEC Network; Game 6: No. 11 seed Texas A&M vs. No. 6 seed Mississippi State SEC Network.
