FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- The Claflin University Lady Panthers outscored Fort Valley State University 11-9 in overtime to pull out a 63-61 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division win Saturday.

With the extra-period win, Claflin evened its season record at 4-4 and improved to 3-1 in the SIAC.

Fort Valley State, which dropped to 5-4 overall, suffered its first SIAC loss of the season in dropping to 3-1.

Joy Okeke led the Lady Panthers offensively with a team-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Fields came off the bench for Claflin to hit the double-digit mark with 14 points and four assists.

Jhanice Stokes also came off the bench for the Lady Panthers to contribute nine points, a game-high 14 rebounds and four block shots.

Alicia Franklin of Fort Valley State led all scorers with 24 points. Amiah Height added 13 points for the Lady Wildcats in the loss.

In the overtime period, Fields and Okeke scored four points each in leading the Lady Panthers. It was Fields free throw that gave Claflin a two-point lead with nine seconds left.

The Lady Panthers held a 62-57 lead with 54 seconds left, but Fort Valley State scored four unanswered points, pulling to 62-61 with 19 seconds left.

The contest was sent into overtime when Height scored on a layup for Fort Valley state with three seconds left in regulation.

Fort Valley, which never led in the second half, outscored Claflin 15-9 in the fourth quarter.

The two teams scored nine points each in the third quarter with the Lady Panthers leading 43-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the first quarter, Claflin used a 15-4 run over 5-plus minutes to turn a one point deficit into a 10 point lead. The run provided the Lady Panthers a 24-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

Fort Valley State outscored Claflin 14-10 in the second quarter to trail 34-28 at the intermission.

The Lady Panthers will return to action at home after a six-game road swing on Monday, Dec. 4, when they host Livingstone College in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena on the campus of Claflin University.
