South Carolina State track and field teams won four events, set a school record and posted 12 top 10 finishes at the USC Outdoor Open Saturday amid cold and windy conditions at the Cregger Track Complex.
Earning first place showings for SC State and Coach Tim Langford were Demek Kemp in the men’s 100 meters (10.24), Tyrell Richard in the men’s 400 meters (45.76), the men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Dyrell Kinloch, Daniel Seawright, Kemp and Richard (3:10.54), and Tyler Duncan in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 10:13.57. Duncan’s time erased the mark of 10:28.56 set by Charles Kurgatt in 2011.
Others earning top 10 finishes were Austin Kemp, 4th in the men’s high jump (1.98m); Matthias Williams, 4th in the men’s javelin (45.25m); Taylor Guthrie, 7th in the women’s discus (33.94m); Keturah Hunter, 7th in the women’s hammer throw (45.84m); Malik Watson, 8th in the men’s 200 meters (21.50); the women’s 4x100-meter relay team of Aniyah Williams, Deja Rogers, Ariyonne Gillespie and Wykasha Space, 8th (48.61); Gillespie, 10th in the women’s javelin (26.62m); Kevin Rucker, 9th in the men’s javelin (27.73m); and Orangeburg’s Daniel Seawright, 10th in the 400 meters (48.61).
SC State resumes its schedule Tuesday at the Savannah State Invite, then prepares for the MEAC Outdoor Championship schedule May 1-4 at Greensboro, NC.
