GREENSBORO, N.C. – South Carolina State’s Taylor Guthrie set a personal record in the discus Thursday at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track Championship with a toss of 36.67 meters (120.3 feet), finishing ninth overall in the event.

In the team standings after day one, the Florida A&M women were ahead with 52.5 points, while the Bethune-Cookman men were first with 22 points.

Guthrie’s performance was the top showing of the day for S.C. State and Coach Tim Langford as high jumpers WyKasha Space and Austin Kemp failed to score and sprinters Demek Kemp, Malik Watson, Daniel Seawright and Tyrell Richard didn’t make the finals in the 200 meters.

Friday should prove to be more productive for S.C. State as both Kemp and Richard are expected to advance in their perspective signature events – the 100 meters and 400 meters, respectively. Also expected to have strong showings for Langford’s teams are Keturah Hunter in the women’s hammer, Aryionne Gillespie in the javelin, Breana Tyler in the long jump, Taylor in the shot put and the women’s 4x100-meter relay squad.

Additional men expected to fare well are Seawright in the long jump, Tyler Duncan in the steeple chase, Tyler Jeffers in the 5000 and the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams.
