SCSU softball signs four student-athletes

— First-year head softball coach Cheretta Stevenson has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent (NLI) at South Carolina State University.

Daysha Stewart of Columbia, Quiana Alexis Hodge of Florence, Jada Shawnthea’ Lake of Lilburn, Ga. and Say’eh Kiashia A’Lexus Campbell of Whiteville, N.C. will all suit for the Lady Bulldogs the 2017 spring season.

“I expect all four players to make an immediate impact on the team," Stevenson said. "I am very excited about my first group of signees; these young ladies will bring diversity to the program."

“They have a great mix of power and speed offensively and defensively, combined with versatility and athleticism.”

STEWART PROFILE

ATHLETE: Daysha Stewart: Columbia, S.C. /W.J. Keenan High School

TRAVEL BALL ORGANIZATION: Slammers, Jets, Rage, and Fire (over the years)

ORGANIZATIONS: FHA secretary, National Honor Society, captain of the softball team for 2 years

HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS: Currently has a 3.8 GPA - A honor roll (3 years), MVP (2 years), All-Region, has received more than 100 trophies, 12 medals, and one championship ring.

JUNIOR YEAR STATS: Recorded 72 strikeouts, four home runs, 64 stolen bases, and a .456 batting average.

STANDOUT MOMENT: Compiled 18 strikeouts and hit a home run in season opener against Calhoun County.

OTHER COLLEGE OFFERS: Benedict, Claflin, Western Carolina, and Belmont Abbey

STEVENSON ON STEWART: After facing Daysha for several years, while coaching at Fairfield Central HS, I wanted her to come play for me at SC State. She is a huge threat on the mound and at short stop. Very athletic and can throw the ball well.

HODGE PROFILE

ATHLETE: Quiana Alexis Hodge: Florence, S.C./South Florence High School

TRAVEL BALL ORGANIZATION: Palmetto Force

ORGANIZATIONS: Beta club for 4 years and the National Honor Society for three years

STANDOUT MOMENT: As a sophomore, hitting a walk-off home run to win against rival West Florence.

HIGH SCHOOL STATS: 65 total games played, 179 at bats, 51 runs, 47 hits, six doubles, one triple, four homeruns, 15 walks, 11 stolen bases, 37 RBI’s….. .391 on-base percentage and .293 batting average. Received Most Improved Player for the 2015 season.

OTHER OFFERS: Florence-Darlington Tech

WHY SCSU: I fell in love with the program itself, coach Stevenson’s unique style and the university.

STEVENSON ON HODGE: An impact hitter who will definitely be an offensive threat to opponents. She will most likely play first base and outfield.

CAMPBELL PROFILE

ATHLETE: Say’eh Kiashia A’Lexus Campbell: Whiteville, N.C./East Columbus High School

TRAVEL BALL ORGANIZATION: Carolina Lightning

ACADEMICS: A honor roll, National Honor Society, Student Body President

ATHLETIC AWARDS: All-State, All-Region, All-District

STANDOUT MOMENT: While playing center field in the 2014 state championship game, I fell over the fence and caught a ball that was going out of the park.

OTHER OFFERS: Academics only (Lenoir Rhyne, Coastal Carolina)

STEVENSON ON CAMPBELL: A pure talent with a love and passion for the game. Loves to compete and has with a wealth of knowledge of the game.

LAKE PROFILE

ATHLETE: Jada Shawnthea’ Lake: Lilburn, Ga. /Parkview High School

TRAVEL BALL ORGANIZATION: Georgia Crusaders

SCHOOL STATS: .376 batting average with .430 on base percentage and .529 slugging percentage; 32 hits, 5 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 18 runs scored, and 19 RBI’s while only striking out one time in 85 at bats.

TRAVEL STATS: .432 batting average, .573 slugging percentage, 27 RBI’s, 3 homeruns, and 16 runs

PITCHING: W-L: 27-11, ERA - 4.23, Saves - 7

OTHER OFFERS: Piedmont College, Clark Atlanta University, and North Carolina Central.

STEVENSON ON LAKE: A complete player and very versatile. She can play several positions.
