Youth Day Saturday
South Carolina State will celebrate Youth/ROTC/Military Appreciation Day Saturday when the Bulldog football team hosts Bethune-Cookman in a 2 p.m. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest at Willie Jeffries Field, Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Youth groups and ROTC brigades throughout the Carolinas and Georgia have been invited to attend the contest and a number of pregame activities.
Veterans and current military personnel will receive one free ticket to the game, however, the ticket must be secured before game day by visiting the Bulldog Ticket Office or calling 803-536-8579.
Recognition program for Jeffries
The Capital City Palmetto Classic recognition program honoring South Carolina State head coach emeritus Willie Jeffries and his wife, Mary Jeffries, scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center was postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Michael. An alternate date will be announced soon.
Garvin speaker at Mt. Pisgah Baptist
South Carolina State men’s head basketball coach Murray Garvin will be the speaker Sunday at the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church Youth Sunday program, beginning at 10 a.m. The church is located at 310 Green St.
Joining Garvin at the program as honored guests will be his players and staff, as well as first-year women’s head coach Audra Smith, along with her team and staff.
The public is welcome to attend.
MEAC extends Thomas contract
NORFOLK, Va.—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Council of Chief Executive Officers has extended the contract of Commissioner Dr. Dennis E. Thomas (who was head football coach at S.C. State 1986-88) through September of 2024.
The 2018-19 academic year marks Thomas’ 17th year as commissioner. During his tenure, the conference has ensured its financial stability (balancing the budget for 16 consecutive years), increased new revenue streams, strengthened institutional compliance and improved student-athletes’ welfare and graduation rates.
