The South Carolina State Bulldogs held their second spring scrimmage Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The offense conducted 85-plays in a one hour forty-five minute game style session in full gear.

“You see some good and some bad from both the offense and defense at this point during the spring,” said Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough. “With three weeks down and the younger players have been more aggressive and showed some signs of being able to step up, but most of is due to securing a spot for coming fall camp.”

Pough noted, “Red-shirt sophomore Tyree Nick is still the front runner at quarterback, but redshirt freshman Corey Fields displays a great deal of confidence of running an offense. We would like to see Fields take more of leadership role but we have to (be) realistic he is still young.”

“The secondary is doing a great job during the spring, despite the youth we have playing, “ said Pough. “ I am extremely pleased with Donte Anthony and Decobie Durant. These guys are going to be some great players for us in the future.”

Durant, a redshirt sophomore from Lamar, finished the season having played in 10 games for the Bulldogs with 38 tackles and two interceptions, while Grant, a freshman, saw limited action, having played in three games with three tackles.

The Bulldog offense showed signs of being able to run the football with scoring drives from Nick and sophomore running back LeBron Morris. Nick finished the 2018 campaign rushing for 903-yards, while throwing 86-of-169 for 1,163-yards and 12 touchdowns.
