A Town Wings at old KFC
A former Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant found new life.
A Town Wings located at 886 John C. Calhoun Drive. The restaurant opened in the spring.
The restaurant, which was founded in Atlanta in 2010, serves wings, fries, fried rice, Philly steak sandwiches, salads, burgers and fish. The menu boasts about 20 different wing flavors.
The restaurant employs about six.
Claflin recruits minority male teachers
Claflin University was selected to participate in a program designed to recruit minority male teachers.
The program is named Project Pipeline Repair.
Project Pipeline Repair is an initiative of the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. It is made possible by a three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Claflin is one of five HBCUs and the only HBCU from South Carolina participating in Project Pipeline Repair.
SCSU gets nuclear research grant
The South Carolina State University Department of Nuclear Engineering was awarded a $288,060 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a way to predict nuclear accidents weeks before they occur.
The predictions could help prevent nuclear spills that would result in dangerous levels of radiation that could affect the health and safety of the public.
The new system will use a direct link between S.C. State’s nuclear department and the Savannah River Site’s National Laboratory in Aiken County.
Hopes are the research will enhance the university’s nuclear engineering program by expanding degree and course offerings, as well as providing additional academic opportunities for students.
Voorhees president inaugurated
Former interim South Carolina State University President Dr. W. Franklin Evans was inaugurated as the ninth president of Voorhees College.
The ceremony at the Episcopal-affiliated institution was just as much a church service as it was an academic affair, with members of the clergy offering Scripture readings, a sermon and communion.
Sigmatex earns Patriot Award
Sigmatex was recognized in April for its support of the National Guard and Reserve forces.
The company received the Patriot Award, which is given by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.
The presentation was made at the company’s plant in the John W. Matthews Industrial Park on U.S. Highway 301.
The Patriot Award is a recognition for employers that have been nominated by their Guardsmen or Reservists for their support while they’re away on active duty and making sure that they’re protected with their job and doing what they’re supposed to do under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994, a federal law that establishes rights and responsibilities for uniformed service members and their civilian employers.
Sigmatex is a British-based carbon fiber textile manufacturer.
Branchville sells school to church group as HQ
Branchville Town Council opened its doors to several new worship facilities.
Council approved selling the old Lockett Elementary School building to Southern District New Covenant Fellowship Inc. for $30,000.
The organization, which is made up of 18 churches across the Southeast, renovated a part of the facility to serve as its central headquarters.
The old Branchville High School building was used by an outreach of the organization.
