A 30-year-old man collapsed and later died after crossing the finish line of a half-marathon in Brooklyn on Saturday morning. A statement from the nonprofit New York Road Runners confirmed the man was a participant in the 2022 RBC Brooklyn Half and collapsed after finishing the race. A New York City fire department spokesperson says the runner was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. It was unclear what caused the man to collapse. A heat advisory was in effect for New York City until 8 p.m. Saturday. The nonprofit says temperatures ranged from the low 60s to high 70s during the race, which began at 7 a.m.

An amputee athlete whose push to set a new world record for the number of daily consecutive marathons inspired people worldwide has wrapped up her quest. South Africa native Jacky Hunt-Broersma completed her 104th marathon in as many days on Saturday near her home in suburban Phoenix. She needed to run at least 102 marathons in 102 days to set an unofficial record. Britain-based Guinness World Records says it's aware of her attempt and will review the paperwork over the next few months. The 46-year-old lost her left leg below the knee to a rare cancer. She raised more than $67,000 to help fellow amputees get expensive prostheses.
An amputee athlete from Arizona has set an unofficial world record, running 102 marathons in 102 days. Jacky Hunt-Broersma achieved that goal on Thursday and now says she may run two more for good measure. She's been covering the classic 26.2-mile distance every day since Jan. 17. The South Africa native runs on a carbon-fiber prosthesis since she lost her left leg below the knee to a rare cancer. The previous women's record of 101 marathons in as many days was set earlier this month by Kate Jayden, a nondisabled British runner. Hunt-Broersma says she hopes her feat inspires others to push themselves.
