MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The South Carolina State men's basketball team will open the 2019-20 season on the road when the Bulldogs travel to No. 14 Memphis Tuesday an 8 p.m. contest at FedEx Forum. The game will be televised live on ESPN3.

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Voorhees ranked 20th

The Tigers, ranked 14th in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 rankings, debut the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation. The Bulldogs, picked fifth in the MEAC preseason poll, return a veteran team with nine letter winners.

Claflin volleyball falls

Johnson C. Smith University completed the regular-season sweep of Claflin University, defeating the Lady Panthers 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Southern Division volleyball match on Saturday at Tullis Arena.

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Gamecock women picked 2nd

The loss dropped Claflin to 6-15 on the season and 5-9 in conference play with three matches remaining. The Lady Panthers will travel to Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday. Claflin closes out the regular season the following week, hosting Fayetteville State on Nov. 12 before traveling to Saint Augustine’s on Nov. 15.

Tigers open season

The Clemson Tigers will embark on year 10 of the Brad Brownell era with an ACC foe in the season opener for the first time in Clemson history. Tipoff vs. Virginia Tech from Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson is 7:01 p.m. Tuesday.

Clemson received a major boost in its lineup last week with the NCAA granting Khavon Moore’s transfer request waiver, allowing Moore to become immediately eligible for the 2019-20 season. Moore is a transfer from Texas Tech and played just two minutes last season.

COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Claflin goes 1-2 in CIAA Round-Up

South Carolina is 9-2 in season openers in 11 seasons under coach Dawn Staley, including wins in the last eight. The Gamecocks are 5-1 in home season openers.

Lawson All-SEC first team

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina sophomore guard A.J. Lawson has been named to the Coaches Preseason All-SEC First Team. Lawson is Carolina's top returning scorer and assist maker.

Simmons named semifinalist

The Butkus Foundation announced that Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons has been named as one of 12 semifinalists for the collegiate Butkus Award.
