U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California will headline next week’s Orangeburg County Democratic Party Cook-off.

“We’re honored that Congresswoman Waters is joining us in Orangeburg,” said Betty Henderson, chair of the Orangeburg County Democratic Party.

In a press release, Henderson said Waters inspires Democrats to get involved in local politics and work for real change in their communities.

“She’s a role model for us all and having her in South Carolina gives me hope that we’ll be able to accomplish everything we need to locally in the next few years to put good people in positions to do some good for our state,” Henderson said.

Waters began serving in Congress in 1991 and currently represents California’s 43rd Congressional District. Before that, the Missouri native served in the California State Assembly.

In addition to “Auntie Maxine,” as she’s often affectionately referred to by Democrats, Congressman James E. Clyburn will also serve as keynote speaker.

“It’s about fun, fellowship and the future,” said Sen. John Matthews, D-Bowman.

Orangeburg County Council District 6 candidate Ray Wannamaker Sabalis said the cook-off is, “A celebration of wonderful people who are committed to the future of Orangeburg County.”

The cook-off will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at The Premiere, 1235 Five Chop Road.

Several local Democratic leaders will offer a variety of delicious food at the event.

From fish and chips to whole hog barbecue to shrimp jambalaya and desserts aplenty, the annual cook-off is a crowd favorite.
