The Wendy's on John C. Calhoun Drive was torn down Wednesday. A new, state-of-art fast-food restaurant is planned for the site.

Charlotte-based Carolina Restaurant Group Inc. closed the Wendy’s restaurant at 746 John C. Calhoun Drive on April 15.

The new restaurant, “will be the latest and greatest of everything from Wendy's," Carolina Restaurant Group President Quint Graham said in April. "It will be a very attractive design and a very attractive facility."

Graham said it usually takes 15 weeks to build a new Wendy’s, although the John C. Calhoun Drive restaurant may take longer.

The restaurant will employ about 40 when it reopens, Graham said. It employed 20 when it closed.

Carolina Restaurant Group purchased both the John C. Calhoun Drive and Citadel Road restaurants in February of this year.

The Citadel Road Wendy’s restaurant, located off of U.S. 601 near Interstate 26, has remained open.

The Citadel Road restaurant will also be renovated in the future.

Messages left for Graham were not returned Wednesday.
