The S.C. Democratic Party’s Executive Committee on Thursday endorsed Arik Bjorn, a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District.
The decision came after Aiken County Executive Committeewoman Peggy Franklin offered a resolution for the state party to endorse Bjorn.
Bjorn will face Phil Black in the June 14 Democratic Primary and the winner will face Congressman Joe Wilson in the general election in November.
“The SCDP typically does not endorse candidates during the primary, but this is a unique situation and requires unique and bold action and leadership,” SCDP Chairman Jaime Harrison said.
The resolution notes Black has run for the seat as a Republican in the past and questioned whether he represents Democratic values.
Harrison added, “Over the past few years we have learned the importance of supporting authentic candidates that adequately demonstrate the ideals and values of the Democratic Party.”
