Regional Medical Center President and CEO Charles Williams speaks at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell stood next to him.

A Regional Medical Center employee is in critical condition after being shot, hospital President and CEO Charles E. Williams said Wednesday afternoon.

Williams said the shooting suspect arrived shortly after 7 a.m. to seek treatment for an undisclosed reason.

The suspect left the hospital, although staff attempted to keep him there, Williams said.

At 8:45 a.m., he returned to the emergency department and fired, he said.

The employee was taken to surgery. The suspect surrendered to RMC security.

Williams would not confirm an earlier report that the victim was a nurse.

The Emergency Department will resume regular operations at 3 p.m. New emergency patients are being diverted to RMC in Bamberg.
