Orangeburg will be a hotbed for 2020 Democratic presidential candidates in coming days.
In addition to Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, visiting Orangeburg as a feature in the CNN Town Hall on Wednesday, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, will be visiting Orangeburg this Friday.
According to The Associated Press, which cites O’Rourke’s campaign, the presidential candidate will be making his first S.C. visit of the presidential campaign.
The stop on Friday is South Carolina State University for a 2:25 p.m. meet-and-greet in the student center plaza.
O’Rourke will host several other events, including in Columbia, Rock Hill and Charleston.
The Democratic candidate also will participate in a town hall hosted by S.C. Sen. Marlon Kimpson, according to AP.
On Wednesday, Booker will be downtown at Stevenson Auditorium in Orangeburg for a one-hour, live televised event moderated by CNN anchor Don Lemon. Booker will take and respond to questions from the audience at the event, which starts at 10 p.m., according to CNN.
According to CNN, the audience will be comprised of local voters. CNN also stated that both Claflin and S.C. State universities reached out to students, faculty and staff, who were able to reserve audience tickets on a first-come, first-served basis.
The South Carolina Democratic Party, along with Orangeburg community organizations, were contacted to identify likely Democratic South Carolina primary voters, according to CNN.
Claflin spokesman George Johnson said the university was provided 180 tickets for students, who were invited via email to sign up to attend with an option to submit a question. CNN is todetermine final attendees and questions.
