BRANCHVILLE – The funeral for Constance Delores “Pete” Colter, 76, of 146 Logan St., Branchville, will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at Canaan Baptist Church in Branchville, with Pastor John Green, presiding, and the Rev. Vernon Blanchard, pastor of the church. Burial will be in Canaan Baptist Church cemetery.
She died Jan. 31, 2019, at the Medical University of South Carolina following an extended illness.
Constance was born Sept. 15, 1942, a daughter of the late Horace Kinlaw and the late Minnie Lee Ambrose. She attended Lockett High School in Branchville but finished her education at Bowman High School in Bowman.
She attended Canaan Baptist Church, where she served in the Senior Choir. She was known by many for her determination, compassion, love and strength.
Constance lived in New York and Charleston, but remained in Branchville most of her life.
She leaves four loving children; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her legacy continues with three daughters, Dean (James) Gadson of Branchville, Joyce (Edward) Madubuobi of Cary, N.C., Detra (Amos) Bostic of Branchville; and a son, Norman Gavin of Bowman. She also reared a grandson as her own, Norman S. Washington. A grandson preceded her in death, Bernard Stroman. Surviving grandchildren are, James T. Gadson, Vametra Gadson, Terrance Gadson, Jerome Simmons, Latri Evans, Derick Maxwell, Tiffany Colter, Ebony Colter, Iesha Bookhart, Neisha Bookhart, Rakim Williams and Alexis Garvin.
She also leaves behind three brothers, Carl Kinlaw, Malcolm (Ophelia) Kinlaw, Ronald (Francello) Kinlaw; four sisters, Christine Thomas, Viola Rice, Angeline (Charles) Williams, Janie (Leonard) Watkins; sisters-in-law, Burnell, Marie (Clay) and Debra; brothers-in-law, John (Willie Mae), Robert (Jennifer) Kelly. Additionally, she leaves to cherish her live-in partner, Norman Gavin of Branchville, and a very special friend who she loved like a mother, Mrs. Bertha Truwell of Orangeburg.
Viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Owens Funeral Home in Branchville. Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.
