HOLLY HILL — The superintendent of Orangeburg Consolidated School District 3 is resigning after four years on the job, it was announced at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
Dr. Cynthia Cash-Greene, who took the reins as superintendent in 2009, has one year remaining on her contract. Following Tuesday’s meeting, board Chairman Betty Shuler said the board and the superintendent reached a mutual agreement for Cash-Greene to step down. Her last day is June 30.
The board voted to hire Dr. David Longshore Jr., OCSD 3’s former superintendent, as interim superintendent for the 2013-2014 school year. Shuler said Longshore will begin his duties on July 1.
“The board will begin making plans for a search for a permanent superintendent within the next several months,” according to a press release distributed at the meeting.
The release stated in part: “Dr. Cash-Greene, who began her tenure as superintendent in 2009, is leaving the district in order to pursue other opportunities. ... The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Cash-Greene for her hard work and dedication to the students of District 3 over the past four school years. Under her tenure, the district accomplished many goals, including an increase in school performance ratings and an increase in graduation rates, which in 2012 exceed the state average.
“Dr. Cash-Greene was also instrumental in bringing competitive grant monies to the district. The grant monies have been utilized in part to transform five of the district’s elementary schools into magnet programs offering innovative programs and theme-based, value-added educational experiences for students. Grant monies obtained under Dr. Cash-Greene’s leadership also have been used to strengthen the district’s character education program and to train elementary and middle school students as Safe Student Ambassadors.
“The Board wishes Dr. Cash-Greene success and happiness in her future endeavors.”
Shuler announced that two other district administrators will also leave the district on June 30: Bonnie Moskos, executive director of curriculum and instruction; and Renee Jeffcoat, director of finance/operations.
Board member Catherine Shuler was the only trustee who voted against hiring Longshore as interim superintendent.
Cash-Greene, who was not immediately available for comment after the board meeting, was hired to lead the district in June 2009. She replaced Longshore, who announced his retirement after 28 years of service to District 3.
When hiring Cash-Greene, the board of trustees approved a three-year contract for her, from 2009-2012. In 2010, the trustees voted to extend her contract through 2013. The board revisited her contract again in 2012, adding an additional year.
Prior to accepting the OCSD 3 superintendent’s job, Cash-Greene worked in Richland School District 1 for 19 years, first as an assistant principal, then as principal and finally as executive director of schools.
The Eutawville native graduated in 1976 from Holly Hill High School. Cash-Greene landed her first teaching job in 1981 at the former Gaillard Elementary School in Eutawville, where she taught preschool.
In 1990, Cash-Greene completed her Ed.D. degree at South Carolina State University.
