ORANGEBURG -- On Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, George Herron, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 82.

George was born April 11, 1936, in Walterboro, to Joseph and Florrie (Pye) Herron. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Orangeburg for 56 years and proudly served as a full-time South Carolina National Guardsman for 42 years. On July 15, 1966, he married the love of his life, Sylvia Jean Sanford. They raised one son, Adam Herron, and two daughters, Wendy Griffis and Angelique Grace, together. He dearly loved his eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Stephen, KJ, Jason, Rachel, David and Zoe; and his four great-grandchildren, Elijah, Sadie, Amelia and Atalie.

George had a great love of animals, which was enriched by working with W.S. Fairey at his veterinary clinic in Orangeburg for 15 years. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed fishing on the Edisto River. George also had a deep and abiding love for the Lord, which was expressed by serving as a Sunday school superintendent at First United Pentecostal Holiness Church. In later years, he was a member of Rivelon Road Baptist Church.

George had an aptitude for mechanics which he learned from his stepfather, Richard Dantzler. George was a proud South Carolinian. He had a profound passion for our state's history and an enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge with others. George was proud to serve South Carolina during natural disasters including Hurricane Hugo and the snow storm of the early 70s.

George is preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Jean; his parents, Joseph and Florrie Herron; stepfather, Richard Dantzler; and sister, Deliah Coot Bowers.

His memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, at the Elks Lodge on Joe Jeffords Blvd., in Orangeburg. Visitation with the family will be held after the service.
