The Regional Medical Center was on lockdown Wednesday following an active shooter incident in the emergency department.

The hospital says one individual has been apprehended, there is no active shooter and the patients are safe.

Emergency cases are being redirected to other facilities, according to spokesperson Carol Koencke-Grant.

One person was injured. Their condition is not immediately available.

The hospital issued the following update at 10:20 a.m.:

At approximately 8:45 a.m., a shooting occurred at the Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department.

One individual was shot and is currently in surgery. We do not have an update on this person’s condition.

Law enforcement is on the scene and the shooter has been apprehended. The building has been cleared by the Sheriff’s Department.

The hospital has returned to normal operations with the exception of the Emergency Department which remains on lockdown and diversion until further notice.

An EAP counselor will be on site shortly and communication will be forthcoming advising of arrival.
