A missing Orangeburg man has been found dead, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matt Trentham said Sunday.

Investigators discovered the body of 36-year-old Jeremy Ballew around 2 p.m. Friday in a pond near St. Matthews.

The pond is about a half-mile from the Free Moon Circle residence where Ballew was last seen around Oct. 31.

Trentham said there were no obvious signs of trauma to Ballew’s body.

The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office will determine the manner and cause of death after Ballew’s body undergoes an autopsy, Trentham said.

“It will remain an open investigation until the cause and manner of death are determined by the coroner,” Trentham said.

On Nov. 11, one of Ballew’s family members reported that she hadn’t heard from him since she dropped him off at the Free Moon Circle home a couple of weeks before.

A deputy spoke with the Free Moon Circle resident on Monday and she said Ballew spent one night there and then left on foot.
