COPE -- Beginning next spring, students will have a new career option in Orangeburg Consolidated School District 4. Trustees recently approved a new course, Commercial Driver's License 1 to be taught at Cope Area Career Center.

Passing the course will enable students to apply at the state highway department for commercial driver’s licenses to drive box trucks when they reach the age of 18, Principal Rick Leonard said. Currently, they have to be 21 to get a license to drive a tractor-trailer truck.

The cost to the district for the course will be minimal, Leonard said. CACC already has an instructor for the program, and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College has given the district approval to use its simulator free of charge.

Various vendors have given the district approval to use their equipment for training purposes, Leonard said.

Also during the board's July meeting, the board approved final reading of a revision to the district’s tobacco-free school policy. The revision adds alternative tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, to the policy.

In other business, Interim Superintendent Dr. Lana Williams recognized Dr. Jeannie Monson, former principal of Carver-Edisto, who will serve as chief academic officer for secondary schools.

Williams also recognized Karen James as the new principal of Carver-Edisto Middle School. James has worked in the field of education for 20 years, where she’s held positions of teacher, curriculum facilitator, teaching and learning coach and assistant principal for curriculum and instruction in OCSD4.

The district is also welcoming Brad Coleman, the new principal of Edisto High School, who comes from Airport High School in Lexington School District II. He has worked in the field of education as teacher, head football coach/athletic director, assistant principal and principal for 22 years.

Williams also recognized Trustee Randy Carrigg and presented him with a certificate of achievement and a pin for achieving Level 3 in the S.C. School Boards Association Boardsmanship Institute.
