Dogwood Festival -- painting of the Dogwoods

To mark the arrival of the festival, a team of volunteers annually paints gigantic dogwood blossoms in the middle of the city’s major downtown intersections.

DENMARK – The Dogwood Festival Pageant has been postponed, but the 38th annual Dogwood Festival on April 5-6 and parade on April 6 will continue as planned.

The Dogwood Festival Committee delayed the pageant due to lack of participation. The event was slated for Saturday, March 30 – the weekend before the festival – and recently received the privilege of sending the winner to compete in the Miss South Carolina Pageant.

A new date for the pageant has yet to be determined, festival committee chair Reba Lofton said.

Also, Denmark Councilwoman Bervay Lee Carter was named grand marshal of the parade.

Carter was selected during Monday’s Denmark Town Council meeting and has a long history in the town in addition to being a council member for about 15 years. She has served as council liaison to the Dogwood Festival Committee for many years.

“I have worked many years while living in Bamberg County as a servant for the people,” Carter said. “My entire career has been spent dealing with the public and young people whom I love. I am most grateful to God and mankind for the opportunities afforded to me and my family.”
