The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a male inmate at the Orangeburg County Detention Center, according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.
Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young said that jailers discovered the unresponsive inmate around 12:07 p.m. Sunday.
Preliminary reports indicate the inmate took his own life, Young said. Officials do not believe foul play was involved.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office hasn’t yet released the inmate’s name or his cause and manner of death.
Young said that when the jailer discovered the unresponsive inmate, the nurse at the detention center attempted to render aid by starting CPR until Orangeburg County EMS arrived.
Once EMS arrived, medics continued to attempt CPR and life-saving measures on the way to the Regional Medical Center, Young said.
Young said an hour prior to his death, the inmate was seen walking around and using the telephone.
The inmate entered the detention center on June 4.
