SLED: Deputies didn’t fire shot in Santee hotel stand-off

A person was found dead in a hotel room Friday afternoon after a standoff in Santee.

Deputies fired no shots in the standoff that ended Friday afternoon with a person’s death, according to S.C. Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry.

Officials were looking for a person charged with burglary in Clarendon County. Clarendon County authorities learned the suspect was in a Santee hotel room.

The Santee Police Department and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the effort to arrest the suspect at the Clarion Inn.

“There was a shot fired through the door at deputies who were approaching the door. No deputies fired their weapons. It is not an officer-involved shooting,” Berry said.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office says it asked SLED to investigate the case after a shot was heard coming inside the hotel room. The person was found dead in the room.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the person who died or cause of death.
