A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle early Friday morning in Orangeburg County.

S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Judd Jones said the accident happened at 5:25 a.m. on Slab Landing Road at Fogle Pond Road.

A 22-year-old-man was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck north on Slab Landing Road as a pedestrian was walking the same direction in the roadway.

The vehicle struck the pedestrian, Jones said.

The driver of the pickup was not injured and wore a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The accident remains under investigation, Jones said.

According to the most recent data released by the S.C. Department of Public Safety, 766 people have died on the state’s highways as of Oct. 7 compared to 763 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017.

To date, 32 people have died this year on highways in Orangeburg County.

Compared to this same time last year, that’s an increase of 11 highway fatalities in the county.

In other areas of The T&D Region, Bamberg County has had one highway fatality this year, compared with two during the same time period last year.

Calhoun County has experienced six highway fatalities, compared with five during the same time period in 2017.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the victim in Friday morning’s accident.
