The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office says it has an Orangeburg man in custody after a search in the area that includes S.C. State University and Claflin University.
Authorities also closed the area near Howard Middle School during the search.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell had previously issued a statement saying, “Investigators are seeking an Orangeburg man in connection with a confrontation that happened early Thursday.
“Investigators are searching for 17-year-old Najquan Hampton. The Utaff Street man is believed to be armed and dangerous.”
The universities had urged students and staff to use caution this morning.
At 7:20 a.m., S.C. State police urged the campus community to “shelter in place” as the U.S. Marshals Service pursued a shooting suspect near Coleman and Jamison avenues.
Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5 announced, “Students from Howard will be at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High school until the situation is cleared by law enforcement.
”All students are safe and are being supervised by students and staff.”
Later, after Hampton was in custody, OCSD5 spokesman Bill Clark said Howard was cleared by law enforcement.
“Students are being prepped for transport from OWHS back to Howard now,” Clark said.
