A nude male was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 95 near Santee early Monday morning.
The collision happened at 5:46 a.m. at mile marker 97, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Judd Jones.
The driver of 2009 Toyota sedan was traveling southbound when her vehicle struck the man, who was walking in the roadway, Jones said.
The driver of the sedan, a 56-year-old woman, was not injured. She was wearing a seatbelt.
Both the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office are looking into the incident.
The coroner’s office did not know the man’s identity by mid-afternoon on Monday.
As of Sept. 9, 676 people have died on South Carolina’s highways compared to 685 highway deaths during the same time period in 2017.
Including Monday morning’s death, there have been a total of 30 highway-related fatalities in Orangeburg County this year.
During this same time period last year, there were 19 highway fatalities in Orangeburg County.
There have been six highway fatalities in Calhoun County and one in Bamberg County so far this year.
