A 26-year-old Cope man is facing an assault charge after allegedly spitting on a nurse twice.
On Thursday at 10:15 p.m., a deputy working security detail at the Regional Medical Center on St. Matthews Road first spoke with the man due to him “being belligerent, spitting and verbally abusive to his nurse,” according to an incident report.
The deputy warned the man about the consequences of his actions.
The man calmed down, apologized and stated he wouldn’t do it again.
The man “was grossly intoxicated and admitted to drinking heavily throughout the day,” a deputy wrote in a report.
The deputy left the room after the man became cooperative.
A short time later, the nurse notified the deputy again about the man’s behavior.
The man allegedly cursed and spit on the left side of the nurse’s face and the left arm.
He admitted to his actions, but blamed it on his intoxication level, the report states.
After receiving medical clearance, deputies arrested the man on one count of third-degree assault and battery and then transported him to the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
