Orangeburg County Detention Center

The inmate who died at the Orangeburg County Detention Center on Sunday was Allen Lee Traxler, according to Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall.

Marshall said Traxler’s manner and cause of death remain under investigation.

The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is investigating his death.

According to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Traxler was 57 and a resident of Bamberg Road in Cope.

Preliminary reports indicate that he took his own life, Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young said.

Jailers discovered Traxler unresponsive in his cell around 12:07 p.m.

Young said that when the jailer discovered Traxler, the nurse at the detention center attempted to render aid by starting CPR until Orangeburg County EMS arrived.

Once EMS arrived, medics continued to attempt CPR and life-saving measures on the way to the Regional Medical Center, according to Young.

Young also noted that jailers saw Traxler walking around and using the telephone about an hour prior to his death.

Traxler entered the detention center on June 4.
