Four people are accused of robbing a Cross convenience store. One of the employees was struck in the back of the head during the incident.
At least two of the suspects are from Eutawville: Johnnie Lee Elmore III, 19, of 171 Craig Street, and Jabriel Dupree, 19, of 350 Cartoon Circle. Two juveniles are also being charged as adults, but complete information was not provided about their identities.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office alleges Elmore wore a T-shirt with the words “stop the violence” during the robbery.
Berkeley County authorities believe the four robbed the Cross Food Mart at 1883 Old Number Six Highway at 11:20 a.m. Thursday, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Carli Drayton.
Each faces one count of armed robbery.
One of the juveniles was taken to the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice on additional charges of first-degree assault and battery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Deputies also took the second juvenile to DJJ to face an additional charge of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Deputies took Elmore and Dupree to the Hill Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the suspects planned a memorable birthday for one of the juveniles.
The four allegedly “armed themselves with handguns and robbed the workers of Cross Food Mart,” the sheriff’s office said.
During the robbery, a female employee was struck on the back of her head.
The store owner fired a warning shot, according to the sheriff’s office.
The four fled the store.
A witness last saw two of the suspects running towards Sharper Drive into a wooded area and entering a silver Mercedes sedan, which was occupied by two other males.
Witnesses provided deputies with a partial license plate number.
Deputies caught up with a vehicle matching that description on Old Number Six Highway near Spiers Landing Road and arrested the four males.
If convicted of armed robbery, they each face up to 20 years in prison.
