St. Matthews Police Department

A driver and two passengers were cited for drug and alcohol violations after trying to avoid a safety checkpoint.

Equipment stolen from work sites

On Sept. 27, while conducting a safety checkpoint at the intersection of Herlong Avenue and Calhoun Road, an officer observed a gray Ford make an illegal turn to avoid the checkpoint. Another office made a legal stop of the vehicle driven by a St. Matthews man. There were two passengers, one of Gaston and the other of St. Matthews.

Handguns stolen on same day in 2 separate incidents

The officer detected the odor of marijuana and alcohol. All three occupants were cited for drug/narcotics violations and liquor law violations.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office

• On Sept. 25, a St. Matthews woman reported that her utility trailer was stolen from her yard. It is a black 6-foot-by-12-foot utility trailer. The trailer was valued at $800.

Convicted felon arrested with cache of stolen weapons

• On Sept. 28, a Pinopolis man reported that someone broke into his pond house in Swansea and stole an aluminum boat, 112 beaver traps, a bunch of tools, a ladder and two tree plant dibbles. The items were valued at $880.

• On Sept. 29, an Elloree man reported that someone broke into his camper and took $1,000. Though some liquor bottles had been moved, no fingerprints were found.
