A utility lineman discovered a decomposed body beneath underbrush in Bamberg County on Tuesday afternoon, Bamberg County Coroner Billy Duncan said.

The body has not yet been identified and is undergoing an autopsy at Newberry Pathology.

The lineman made the discovery along U.S. Highway 78/Heritage Highway, Duncan said.

Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell said the S.C. Law Enforcement Division is assisting with the investigation.

Darnell said the body had been there “several days.”

He noted that the body may be related to a missing person’s case in Orangeburg County.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry said, “SLED is working with the Bamberg County Sheriff’s Office on the case.”

He noted that it’s not yet known if the body discovered on Wednesday is connected to an Orangeburg County case.
