BAMBERG — The Bamberg Police Department is now fully staffed with 11 officers on duty in addition to office personnel.

Chief George Morris said the addition of three new hires provides a well-rounded mixture of young officers just starting out and more experienced officers with years of service under their belts.

“We’re up to date, and have a really good staff,” Morris said.

All combined, the officers have a total of 142 years of law enforcement experience; Morris alone been in law enforcement for 45 years.

In addition, Karen Proveaux, clerk of court and office manager, has been with the department for nine years, and victim’s advocate Stephanie Jones has seven years of service.

Before the year is out, the Bamberg PD hopes to add one more member to its force, a K-9 unit. Fundraising has been under way but additional money is needed to obtain the dog, train the officer/handler and cover the day-to-day expenses of the dog.

“We still need about $10,000 more to get going,” Morris said. “We are about half the way there.”

Sgt. Corey Bamberg will be the K-9 handler, Morris said. Part of the expenses of having a K-9 unit will be for yearly recertification. Morris said one or two more fundraisers will be announced shortly. Funds raised so far are the result of a gun raffle, a 5K race and monetary donations from individuals, businesses and industries.

Two Bamberg PD officers currently serve in dual roles as school resource officers and patrolmen after school hours. Patrolman Vaishali Patel is SRO at Bamberg-Ehrhardt Middle School, and Sgt. Corey Bamberg serves as SRO at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. Both Patel and Bamberg cover Richard Carroll Elementary School as well.

Currently serving with the Bamberg Police Department in addition to Morris, Patel, Bamberg, Proveaux and Jones are Assistant Chief Doug Kirby, Capt. Robert Thompson, Lt. James Smoak, Sgt. Chris Sandifer, Cpl. Mike Strauss, Patrolman John Zorn, Sgt. Regina Gatling and Patrolman Antonio Green.
