An Orangeburg man wanted for a local hotel robbery was killed Monday during a robbery at a Columbia motel, police say.

Vincent Carson of 1324 Saint Ann Street was being sought in connection with the July 14 robbery of an elderly couple at an Orangeburg motel.

The Richland County Coroner's Office confirmed the 43-year-old died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Carson was shot as he attempted to rob and rape a clerk at the Days Inn on Plumbers Road, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

The incident began around 6 a.m. when a clerk found Carson inside the business. Carson held a knife on her and began to tie her up.

That's when she pulled a derringer-type pistol from her bra and fired a round at point-blank range, authorities say.

The clerk was not physically injured in the assault attempt. However, she was taken to Palmetto Health Baptist as a precaution.

Richland County authorities say the clerk was the victim of another robbery attempt only weeks ago. After that, she began carrying a .22-caliber pistol.

Orangeburg County officials have been seeking Carson in connection with the robbery of an 82-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife at the Hampton Inn on St. Matthews Road.

The couple said a gunman forced his way into their first-floor room.

Warrants accuse Carson of holding them against their will before taking about $750 in cash, a cell phone and a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. A witness said he saw a man drop off the vehicle, and ride away with a woman.

Jessica Dawn Brown, 22, of 322 Ferncliffe Road, Elgin, has been arrested on charges of armed robbery, first-degree burglary and kidnapping in connection with the Orangeburg robbery. Brown is still being held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center.
