An early morning collision between a tractor-trailer and a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 26 resulted in the death of the truck driver.

The collision occurred at 4:44 a.m. near mile marker 169 about 7 miles south of Holly Hill. It involved a 2003 Freightliner tractor-trailer and a 2010 Jeep Liberty, S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper First Class Tyler Tidwell said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

"Earlier the median was on fire and a little bit of diesel did spill on the roadway. The fire department was called in," Tidwell said.

The crash, which closed I-26 westbound traffic for hours, is being investigated by the S.C. Highway Patrol MAIT Team.
