Bamberg School District 2’s kitchens will be making lunches again on Wednesday after being closed following a visit by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The district has been providing catered lunches since Friday. Breakfast was prepared on site.

“No child who eats lunch did not get lunch,” Bamberg School District 2 Superintendent Dr. Thelma Sojourner said.

Before DHEC’s visit on Thursday, the elementary and middle school kitchens had C ratings. The high school had an A.

DHEC identified several issues at the schools that needed to be addressed, including requiring a deep cleaning. A cleaning company was brought in for the work.

In addition, floors needed repairs to the tile and holes had to be plugged to prevent insects from entering. Lights had to be added to the freezers.

“We really didn’t have to close the high school” kitchen, Sojourner said.

DHEC will visit the schools again on Thursday. Sojourner expects them to receive A ratings.
