BAMBERG - Bamberg City Council approved final reading of an ordinance authorizing $375,000 for a lease-purchase agreement to purchase a new fire truck and knuckle boom truck for the city.

Council also agreed to pursue funding from the South Carolina Parks and Recreation Department to complete planned work on the Veterans Memorial Park located at the corner of U.S. Highways 301 and 78.

Local veterans Philip Grooms and Sonny Beard appeared before council to request the funding.

The cost to complete the park, including brick pathways, benches and landscaping, is estimated at approximately $13,000. A PARD grant requires a 20 percent local match, meaning the city’s share would be approximately $2,500.

In other business, Mayor Nancy Foster appointed newly-elected Councilwoman Bridget Kinard as the commissioner over Public Buildings, Parks, Franchises and Economic Development and also as a member of the Fire and Sanitation commissions.
