ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Orangeburg County Fair, Judge Hughes and Mrs. Annie Fogle, c. 1950s. Judge Hughes was the Secretary of the Orangeburg County Fair from 1911 until his death in 1970. Essentially the Secretary was the general manager in charge of the entire fair. He had the reputation as the best manager around. His word was his bond and his handshake was as good as a written contact. Mrs. Annie Fogle was in charge of the canned goods exhibit and competition from 1913 until around 1975. One of her sons, Sam T. Fogle, later served as the manager of the fair for over 15 years from the 1970s to the 1990s.
