Marrisa Coffing was crowned Miss Denmark Technical College 2017-2018.

DENMARK – Denmark Technical College celebrated 70 years of Elegance and Excellence with the Coronation of Marrisa Coffing, Miss Denmark Technical College 2017-2018, Nov. 10. The royal court attendees assisting the queen for the evening included the Lady In Waiting, Ke’Andra Hightower; and the Queen’s Gentlemen, Cedric Cubit and Trivon Goodwin.

The night was filled with music provided by the world renowned Denmark Technical College Choir headed by Dr. Yvette McDaniel. The Men’s Ensemble serenaded a special tribute and alumni Myron Brooker and Ashley Jordan performed a duet singing “There’s a Place for Us” from West Side Story. Janice McCollom was Mistress of Ceremonies announcing the evening guests and activities.

Dr. Christopher Hall crowned Miss DTC at her coronation. Reflecting back on the event he commented, “The role of Miss DTC is as an official ambassador for the college, representing the very best that the college has to offer as we move forward in transforming this college into the great institution it will be. I know Ms. Coffing will carry herself with steadfast Denmark Tech pride. Her poise, integrity, and sophistication will serve as a source of inspiration and her reign will leave a positive mark in the history of the college.”

Coffing follows in the footsteps of great women who have left behind an even greater legacy of serving this institution. She says of her goals, “I strive to present myself as a young woman of character. Representing those who may one day look to my behavior as a template for change is something I cherish. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as 2017-18 Miss Denmark Technical College; I will not forget the struggles that have proceeded and will continue the virtues that offer forward-momentum to Panthers today and to generations to come.”

Born and raised in Loxahatchee, Florida, Coffing currently resides in Due West, S.C. She graduated from Abbeville High School where she was a member of the All-Varsity team; honored as All-Region for three seasons and Offensive and Defensive MVP. Coffing, a freshman, is pursuing her Associates Degree in Criminal Justice and is the Captain of the Lady Panther basketball team. After graduation from Denmark Technical College, she plans to attend South Carolina State University to pursue the Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and continue her passion for playing basketball. Ultimately, she plans to become a police officer.

Her favorite quote comes from the words of Maya Angelou, “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

Miss Denmark Technical College is a tradition at DTC, and the queen is chosen by the student body to serve for one year. During this time she is an ambassador to the community representing Denmark Technical College in many social events both on and off the campus.
