More than 40 teams gathered at the Orangeburg County Fairgrounds for the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event on April 29, raising more than $100,000 in the fight against the disease.
The 2018 Orangeburg County Relay for Life Committee and other volunteers met at Orangeburg Lutheran Church on June 5 for a wrap-up ceremony to recognize corporate sponsors, celebrate the teams that participated and honor one of its committee members with a Don Tribble service award.
The event raised $109,246 through the participation of 42 teams.
"You really do make a difference. I just can't thank you enough. I'm really looking forward to a magnificent 2019 with all of you guys," said Marnie Walls, American Cancer Society community manager.
Peggy Fogle, accounting chairperson for the Orangeburg County Relay for Life Committee, was presented the Don Tribble service award for her dedication to the event.
Tribble was credited with helping get the fundraiser reestablished in Orangeburg some 20 years ago.
"At that point and time, they named this award after him," Walls said, noting that Fogle represented the "true spirit" of Relay with her dedicated volunteerism.
"She is so very deserving of this," Walls said.
Fogle was appreciative of the recognition.
"I thank the team for working hard. I'm at a loss for words," she said.
Delle Bolen, an Orangeburg County Relay for Life Committee co-chair, expressed her appreciation for all who participated to make the 2018 event a success.
"We've had another very successful Relay because of you all, and we want to celebrate that fact ... . Relay 2018 has come and gone, but the memories we made will live on and on," Bolen said.
The theme for the 2019 event will be “Better Together in Red, White and Blue.”
Walls said, "We have an amazing committee here ... . We love the fact that we have new participants join us every year."
